FUNDING AVAILABLE UNDER NATURAL DISASTER MITIGATION PROGRAMME Local councils and other eligible organisations can now apply for funding under the Natural Disaster Mitigation Programme, The Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, announced today. Mrs Hull said grants are available for natural disaster mitigation works, measures and related activities that contribute to safer, sustainable communities better able to withstand the effects of natural disasters. “We have seen in the Riverina how devastating natural disasters can be with the bushfires which ravaged Junee earlier this year,” Mrs Hull said. “I encourage councils and other eligible organisations in the region to submit applications for projects including natural disaster risk management studies, early warning systems, community awareness measures and structural works to protect against damage.” Mrs Hull said local agencies that are responsible for disaster management and mitigation works including local councils, Indigenous community councils, catchment management authorities and state or territory government agencies where that agency is the relevant responsible agency can apply for funding. “Natural disasters such as floods, bushfires and tropical cyclones cause more than $1 billion damage each year to homes, businesses and the nation’s infrastructure, along with serious disruption to communities. Mrs Hull said the Australian Government will offer $15.6 million nationally under the programme which has been expanded to absorb the flood mitigation activities previously undertaken under the Regional Flood Mitigation Programme which will be integrated into the Natural Disaster Mitigation Programme from 1 July 2007. To date, over $36 million in Australian Government funding has been approved under the programme. The closing date for applications is Friday 23 February 2007.
