Appointments To The Australian Industrial Relations Commission

The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Tony Abbott, today announced the appointment of two new Commissioners to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC).

Mr Peter Richards and Mr Bill Mansfield were appointed as AIRC Commissioners by the Governor-General on 5 September 2002. They will take up their new positions on 30 September 2002.

Minister Abbott welcomed the appointments, saying both appointees had the expertise, commitment and skills necessary to make a valuable contribution to the work of the AIRC.

Mr Richards is currently the Industrial Registrar of the Australian Industrial Registry, which provides administrative support to the AIRC. Prior to that he held senior positions with the Business Council of Australia and the Victorian public service, and was a senior adviser to my predecessor, Peter Reith, from 1996-98.

Mr Mansfield is an Assistant Secretary of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. Prior to that he was a union official for many years and served as the Federal Secretary of the Australian Telecommunications Employees Association. He has worked in the union movement for 31 years.

It is anticipated that Commissioner Richards will be based in Brisbane and Commissioner Mansfield in Melbourne.

Minister Abbott said that the Government expects to announce shortly a replacement for Vice President McIntyre, who retired on 5 August 2002.
