Minister for Industry, Science and Resources

19 October 1999

The Minister for Industry, Science, and Resources, Senator the Hon Nick Minchin, today congratulated Aust ralia’s automotive producers on their outstanding export efforts. Exports rose from $2.5 billion in 1997-1998 to $2.8 billion in 1998-1999.

This was a record breaking performance and represented 9 per cent growth over last year. It was a significant achievement in a world market that is characterised by over capacity.

Senator Minchin said the strong growth of Australia’s automotive exports reflected the combined success of Government policy and hard work done by industry.

“Notable successes were seen in the strong sales of Toyota and Holden vehicles to the Middle East.

“The selection of Air International as one of General Motors suppliers of the year, from a field of 30,000 candidates, and its success in gaining a $500 million contract to supply air-conditioning systems to the US company was another outstanding achievement”, Senator Minchin said.

The Minister also highlighted emerging exporters in innovative automotive fields such as Oztrack which supplies the German market with telematics and navigation equipment used in global satellite positioning systems.

“The industry’s export performance vindicates the Government’s automotive industry policy, an important element of which was the commitment of $20 million over four years to the Automotive Market Access and Development Strategy.

“This program is funding the appointment of in-market specialists in key automotive centres to support the Australian industry’s push into global markets. The program also supports the worldwide marketing of the Australian automotive industry’s capabilities through the highly successful aXcess Australia concept car.

“This outcome is highly gratifying, coming on top of the enactment of the Government’s comprehensive automotive legislation last week. This legislative package is designed to encourage investment and innovation and to secure the future of this important industry”, Senator Minchin concluded.
