Senator Lyn Allison Australian Democrats Senator for Victoria

13 August 2003 MEDIA RELEASE 03/575

Pt Nepean coastline at risk Answers obtained by Australian Democrats’ Senator Lyn Allison reveal the Federal Government will allow developers to turn the beach and foreshore at Pt Nepean into private property. Senator Allison asked in the June Budget Estimates hearings whether the Federal Government intended to sell the beach and a written reply from the Defence Department confirmed it is for sale. Senator Allison said, “It is an outrage that the Federal Government would even consider selling Crown foreshore land when Australia-wide private ownership of beaches is totally at odds with principles of public access and good coastal management. Beach and foreshore land must absolutely not be sold for development.” The question: Was it the intention of the Government that the beach and foreshore land would be available to the purchaser of the site: for their exclusive use; for commercial use; and for on-selling for either purpose? The answers: Yes, yes, and yes. Senator Allison said, “The Federal Government should accept the community plan to keep Pt Nepean land in public ownership, including the beach, and it must abandon the greedy and deceitful sell off.” This is the latest disturbing revelation that the Democrats have uncovered by using the accountability procedures of the Senate. Previously, Senator Allison revealed the ‘no-housing’ guarantee was rubbish, forcing the Minister to concede that there will still be extensive opportunities for new residential subdivision and development on the site.
