MEDIA RELEASE Minister for Health and Ageing

Tony Abbott MHR 16 March 2007 ABB023/070 After-hours GP services in New South Wales Last week, the Prime Minister announced that the Commonwealth Government will provide a grant of $200,000 over two years to establish a new bulk-billing after-hours GP clinic in Ryde. The New South Wales Labor Party has today announced that it will match the Commonwealth Government’s funding and assist with locating this service at the campus of Ryde Hospital if elected. The New South Wales Liberal Party has already committed to matching the Commonwealth Government’s funding for this clinic. This provides certainty for the establishment of the Ryde clinic and ensures that community access to after-hours primary care services can be dramatically improved which will help both local doctors and their patients. Commonwealth Government funding for the Ryde after-hours GP clinic comes on top of substantial commitments in this area. As well as funding for start-up grants, operational subsidies and supplementary grants, the Commonwealth Government is providing on-going Medicare rebates for the services provided. Since announcing the After Hours Primary Medical Care initiative in 2001, followed by the Round the Clock Medicare initiative in 2004, the Commonwealth Government is spending $7.2 million on nine after-hours clinics co-located in public hospitals in New South Wales. These services are at: • Albury Base Hospital • Belmont Hospital • Campbelltown Hospital • Liverpool Hospital • Maitland Hospital • John Hunter Hospital (in Newcastle) • Nepean Hospital (in Penrith) • Hawkesbury District Hospital (in Windsor) • Woy Woy Hospital The Commonwealth Government is also providing funding of $4.5 million to after-hours GP services in the community setting in New South Wales. These locations include Banora Point, Berowra, Camden, Charlestown, Dubbo, Edgecliff, Erina, Hazelbrook, Hurstville, Kiama, Newcastle East, Panania, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Toronto and Tweed Heads.
