Minister for Veterans' Affairs Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence

Monday 21 February 2005 VA012

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, De-Anne Kelly, today congratulated Greenslopes Private Hospital on 10 years service to the Queensland veteran community as part of Ramsay Health Care.

Mrs Kelly said the anniversary marked the continued strong association between veterans and Greenslopes, which began its operations in 1942 treating casualties of World War II.

“Ramsay Health Care pledged to foster and maintain the hospital’s veteran tradition when it took over Greenslopes in 1995 and it has demonstrated this strongly during the past 10 years,” Mrs Kelly said.

“Many of the hospital buildings commemorate significant members of the Queensland ex-service community and there are areas in the grounds dedicated to veterans.”

To coincide with its 10th anniversary, Greenslopes Private Hospital has announced its Veterans’ Research Foundation will be relaunched as the Gallipoli Research Foundation.

The vision of the Gallipoli Research Foundation is to become an internationally renowned centre of excellence in health and medical research. There is already a number of new initiatives proposed for the Foundation, including the establishment of a centre for cancer and related disorders and a living tumour bank which will allow researchers to test new therapies on cancer cells.

“The Gallipoli Research Foundation will support researchers who are seeking cures and treatment of a range of major conditions affecting the health of veterans as well as the wider community,” Mrs Kelly said.

“The Australian Government makes a significant commitment to research into the health of our veterans and it is gratifying to see that the Greenslopes Private Hospital is working towards the same aim.

“I congratulate both the staff of Greenslopes Private Hospital and Ramsay Health Care for their long-term care and vision of health for the veteran community in Queensland and Australia.”
