23 November 2006

Sydney students today helped launch a pilot programme to promote greater harmony on Australia’s beaches for this coming summer season.

‘On the Same Wave is a response to last year’s Cronulla riots,’ Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Andrew Robb said.

‘It encourages young Australians, particularly those from Middle Eastern backgrounds, to safely use and share our beaches.

‘The Australian Government has provided $860 000 for the project under its Living in Harmony programme,’ Mr Robb said.

On the Same Wave is a partnership between the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Surf Life Saving Australia and Sutherland Shire Council.

Between November 2006 and January 2007, young people from NSW schools and community groups will take part in a number of beach awareness and safety training sessions in and around Sydney as part of the programme.

Each session also highlights the personal development and community service opportunities that surf life saving clubs offer.

Over the next two days, students from the Oatley Senior Campus of Georges River College will complete a surf rescue course that teaches survival and life saving techniques.

‘The programme will introduce young people to the importance of mutual respect on the beach and in other public places and encourage positive community attitudes,’ Mr Robb said.

‘It will also provide them the chance to learn more about Surf Life Saving Australia, one of Australia’s iconic community service organisations,’ he added.
