Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government

26 June 1998

The Federal Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, Alex Somlyay, today congratulated the Australian Capital Region Development Council (ACRDC) and the Chief Minister, Mrs Kate Carnell, on the Australian Capital Region Display winning the best interstate exhibit at the NT Expo being held in Darwin.

"The Display promotes the Region as a great place to do business, invest and to visit," Mr Somlyay said.

The NT Expo, which runs from 26 to 28 June, showcases Australia's trade, business, investment and tourism potential to the world.

The Australian Capital Region Display was co-ordinated by the ACT Government and the ACRDC.

"In addition my Department provided $15,000 to the ACRDC to help with the Display and clearly it has been money well spent," Mr Somlyay said.

The ACT and Australian Capital Region has 20 exhibits in the Display. The Region comprises the ACT and the 17 surrounding local government areas. It extends from Young and Goulburn in the North to Eden and Bombala in the South.

A number of local products and services are promoted, ranging from information technology and forensic services to sports bottles, local wines and smoked meats, such as kangaroo prosciutto.

The award was made by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Mr Tim Fischer.

"The NT Government and the NT Chief Minister, Mr Shane Stone, should also be congratulated for staging such an impressive export focused event", Mr Somlyay said.
