Access to research findings on students with literacy and numeracy learning difficulties will be enhanced with today’s release of the latest issue of the Schooling Issues Digestseries.

The report will inform our understanding of how we can best help students who have learning difficulties - such as dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder / Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - which for too long have prevented otherwise bright and capable students from fulfilling their potential.

The report highlights:

● that between 10 and 16% of Australian students are thought to have learning

difficulties - particularly in literacy - that require support services not generally available in the classroom; ● that students who experience learning difficulties in literacy and numeracy are likely

to have difficulty across all school subjects; ● that students assessed as having learning difficulties need support from targeted

intervention programmes as soon as memory, organisational and language difficulties become apparent; and ● giving teachers and parents relevant diagnostic information is a key step in

providing programmes of intervention.

The report was prepared by Australian academics Professor Ian Hay of the University of Queensland, and Dr Gordon Elias and Mr George Booker from Griffith University.

The Australian Government is committed to improving the literacy and numeracy standards of all Australian children, including students with learning difficulties such as Attention Deficit Disorder / Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Over the next four years, the Government will provide around $2.1 billion to support the most educationally disadvantaged students, including those with learningdifficulties, through the Literacy, Numeracy and Special Learning Needs (LNSLN) Programme.
