Media Release

Boost for the arts in regional Western Australia

Regional communities in Western Australian will benefit from $340,000 in arts grants from the Commonwealth Government's Regional Arts Fund, announced today by Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp.

The five funded projects fall under two strategic programs-Arts Agencies Skills Development Initiatives and Strategic Regional Partnerships-supported by the Regional Arts Fund in Western Australia over the next two years.

'These projects will boost opportunities for community building and regional sustainability for artists,' Senator Kemp said.

The five projects include:

a coordinator for Pilyparra Pilbara art gallery in Port Hedland; ● a youth and community arts coordinator for Esperance and the Southern Goldfields; ● a regional arts development officer for the South West of the State; ● a local government cultural planning program to promote the arts in regional and remote

communities across the State; and ●

a program to develop employment opportunities for visual artists in regional and remote Western Australia. ●

'Over three years the Commonwealth Regional Arts Fund has allocated $1,192,200 to Western Australia to improve opportunities in the arts in regional and remote communities across the State,' Senator Kemp said.

'During the Year of the Outback the Regional Arts Fund is fostering the wealth of artistic talent outside the capital cities.'

The Regional Arts Fund provides funds directly to regional arts organisations in each State -where an independent committee, comprising of regional arts practitioners from around the State, assesses applications.

The Regional Arts Fund is a Commonwealth Government initiative supporting the arts in regional and remote Australia and in Western Australia is administered by Country Arts WA.
