The Hon Mark Vaile MP

Minister for Transport and Regional Development

The Minister for Transport and Regional Development, Mark Vaile, today welcomed the revised air services arrangements between A ustralia and Argentina and the opportunities that were now available for carriers of both sides.

"This Government is committed to fully exploring the trade and tourism opportunities which exist between Argentina and Australia, and we can facilitate this b y developing sound air links" the Minister said.

The new arrangements which were announced by President Menem and Prime Minister Howard today allow;

* carriers from both sides to operate daily services on the route by March 1999;

*   access to two additional gateway points and, on a 'codeshare' basis, to all other points in each country;

*   access to one point in Asia on a 'codeshare' basis and unrestricted traffic rights at Auckland for Argentina in exchange for improved rights beyond Argentina for Australia;

*   expansive 'codeshare' arrangements including with third country airlines; and

* daily freight services.

"Currently Aerolineas Argentinas operates three services each week. I am hoping that these arrangements can allow these services to be expande d as well as possibly seeing an Australian carrier enter the market" the Minister said.

"We got the mix right with this agreement with Argentina and have ensured that this developing market, which grew by 20 per cent last year, is given the right ingredie nts to grow and mature."

The arrangements concluded with Argentina are indicative of this Government's commitment to air services arrangements which are liberal and flexible and which reflect the needs of the market they govern.

"The bottom line is to en sure that we have air links which can assist in promoting closer economic, trade and tourism links" the Minister said.
