Federal Government funding boost for Local Councils in Maranoa

Councils throughout the electorate of Maranoa will receive a total of more than $62 million of Federal Coalition Government assistance in 2003-04 for local roads and the provision of other local government services through grants, Federal Member for Maranoa, Bruce Scott announced today

“These Local Government Financial Assistance Grants (see page 2 for individual council details) help councils to provide the high quality services that local communities need and expect of their local council,” Mr Scott said.

“The grants are untied. This means that each council can allocate the funds according to local priorities. Funds are used by councils to provide a range of health, community, recreational, cultural, and environmental services and to provide and maintain vital infrastructure such as roads.”

”They are part of the ongoing assistance the Australian Government has provided to local communities for almost 30 years”.

Mr Scott said the Federal Coalition Government was aware of the importance of the grants he had approved to councils in Queensland.

“Nationally, the Australian Government will provide $1.508 billion in financial assistance grants to local government” he said.

Mr Scott said the Government had increased total funding to councils for 2003-04 by $53.4 million and had increased funding to councils by around $344 million since the current Government came to office in 1996.

“The grants are paid under the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995, with the first quarterly payment to be paid on 2 September.”

In addition to these grants, councils in Queensland will receive $62.5 million this year for local roads under the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Programme.
