Press Release Ref: 748 Published: 12/7/2002 Title: Unemployment drops in Eden-Monaro

New figures released today show the number of people receiving unemployment payments in Eden-Monaro continues to fall.

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Gary Nairn said, “The Labour Force numbers for June, 2002, show in Bega there was a 4% drop in the number of people being given the Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance from the previous month.

In Queanbeyan the rate dropped by 0.8%, Batemans Bay 0.9%, and Narooma 1.7%.

Mr Nairn said, “overall the number of people accessing assistance from Centrelink dropped by 15 in June to 3273.

“But the result is 253 less than the figure recorded in January this year which was 3567.

“It’s pleasing to see the falls in Eden-Monaro, further evidence the Federal Government’s employment programs are working,” he said.

Mr Nairn said, “Although there is still work to be done in this area, it’s great to see more people in Eden-Monaro have a job.”

“Cooma was the only place in the electorate to record a rise, 7.8%.

But Mr Nairn points out this is in line with previous movements at the same time of the year where many people from outside the area arrive in the town in the hope of finding work for the snow season.

“In June, 2001, 460 people were registered for the Newstart or Youth Allowance in Cooma compared to 456 this year,” he said.

Nationally the number dropped by 7,193 to 460,196.

Ends…Thursday, July 11, 2002.
