Howard Should Clear Air on West Papua Attacks

4th April 2005

Monday 4 April 2005

Greens Senator Bob Brown has called on Prime Minister to ask Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono about Indonesia's military attacks on West Papuan highland villages in recent weeks. An estimated 6000 Papuans have fled into the mountains.

“This is a brutal operation against the Papuan villages. Last month the Senate passed a motion urging Foreign Minister Alexander Downer to investigate the attacks with his Indonesian counterpart,” Senator Brown said.

“With a security pact with Indonesia on the agenda it is important the West Papua military repression be on Mr Howard's agenda,” Senator Brown said.
