Peter Andren MP - Independent Member for Calare

14 October 2003

Cultural Heritage Grants Available

Funding applications are invited for projects that address the conservation of nationally significant places, according to Federal Member for Calare, Peter Andren.

“A place of national significance is defined as an outstanding example of aesthetic, historic, scientific or social significance or other special value at a national level,” Mr Andren said.

“A place must be listed on the Register of the National Estate or its Interim List, or on a state heritage list that provides long-term statutory protection.

“However the program does not fund works to places whose significance is primarily natural.

“Funding is also available for the identification of Indigenous places for conservation planning or heritage listing, providing that the likely significance of the place extends beyond the local region.

“There are many such Heritage places in Calare, and with funding of between $10,000 to $250,000 for individual projects available, I encourage eligible individuals and groups to apply for these grants.

“Eligible applicants include incorporated not-for-profit groups, private individuals or Crown lease holders of the place or local Councils, although priority is given to not-for-profit organisations.

“The program is not open to federal or state agencies, including educational institutions,” Mr Andren explained.

“Applications close on Friday 14 November.
