What: Traditional welcome home to Fleet Base West for the Ship’s Company of HMAS ARUNTA from a six month deployment in the Persian Gulf as part of Australia’s contribution to the international coalition against terrorism.

Who: The Parliamentary Secretary to Defence, The Honourable Fran Bailey, and the Maritime Commander Australia, Rear Admiral Raydon Gates, will welcome home the ship.

When: Monday 2 December 2002 at 10.00am

Where: The HMAS STIRLING Pass Office, Garden Island, Western Australia


The Parliamentary Secretary, Fran Bailey, family and friends will welcome home the crew of the ANZAC Class Frigate, HMAS ARUNTA to Fleet Base West after spending six months deployed in the Persian Gulf along with other Multinational Interception Force units where they have been blocking attempts to smuggle contraband by sea in and out of Iraq in contravention of United Nations sanctions.

ARUNTA has been serving in the Gulf with HMAS MELBOURNE and other ships of the Multinational Interception Force. Together these two Australian Warships have completed over 600 boardings of vessels in the Persian Gulf over the last six months which is a significant achievement.

Media Notes:

Media to assemble at the HMAS STIRLING Pass Office (immediately off Point Peron Road

Rockingham) at 9:10am sharp for a security briefing and transport to the arrival wharf.

Intention to attend should be advised to Gary Booth by 8 am on 0418 223 807. Photographic

identification will be required. The ship will berth at 10 am. Parking is available for media

crews next to the Pass Office. Media Helicopters will be permitted to land at Fleet Base

West’s Helicopter Support Facility, subject to prior advice to Gary Booth by 8 am.
