Joanna Gash MP Member for Gilmore

8 December 2004

When the drought breaks and the floods return, Terara residents can take solace from the fact that the levee bank protecting the township will have been rehabilitated thanks to an Australian Government grant of $5000.

The grant was announced by Member for Gilmore, Joanna Gash who said the money will be going straight to Shoalhaven Council so they can do remedial works on the levee.

"It's easy to forget why the levee was put into place originally, unless you were a resident during flooding.

"Terara was almost completely washed away in the 1800's following a massive flooding of the Shoalhaven River.

"In fact a memorial to that event was erected near the bridge, featuring a whale boat used in the rescues at that time.

"The boat has since been taken away but the building remains to serve as a reminder that the event can be repeated.

"The funding was awarded through the Australian Government's Regional Flood Mitigation Program and will reduce the threat of flooding to historical Terara", Mrs Gash said.
