Northern Territory Welcomes Around 150 New Aussies

26 January 2006

The Northern Territory will welcome around 150 new Australians in five citizenship ceremonies across the Top End on Australia Day, the Australian Government Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, John Cobb said today.

‘A record number of 14 000 people will become Australian citizens at ceremonies around the country this Australia Day,’ Mr Cobb said.

The largest ceremony in the NT will take place in Darwin at The Playhouse, with 58 people from countries such as the Phillipines, East Timor, Sudan and the UK being conferred Australian citizenship.

The ceremony will also feature a flag raising ceremony and presentation of awards, including the Darwin citizen of the year, young citizen of the year and event of the year.

Mr Cobb congratulated all those acquiring citizenship.

‘I am delighted that so many people around the nation are becoming Australian citizens on this national day of celebration and I warmly welcome them to the Australian family,’ the Minister said.

‘These new Australian citizens come from more than 90 places of birth and they join more than 3.5 million people who have become citizens since Australian citizenship was introduced more than 55 years ago.

‘Citizenship is the unifying force in our culturally diverse society and I encourage those who are eligible to take the step and become a citizen,’ Mr Cobb said.

In addition, thousands of people will participate in affirmation ceremonies across the country.

‘Australia Day is an ideal time for Australians to make a public statement affirming their loyalty and commitment to Australia and its people by taking part in an affirmation ceremony,’ Mr Cobb added.
