The Wimmera Primary Care Partnership will receive an asthma community grant of $9,282.00 for the Wimmera Asthma Project, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee, John Forrest said today.

Mr Forrest said the proposal to offer an accredited asthma educators session demonstrated there was enormous interest in improving knowledge about asthma management within the community.

Bernadette Hetherington, Coordinator, Wimmera Primary Care Partnership said that the sessions are to be held in Horsham for the 20 workers who participated in the 2002 course.

“This will be offered along side another one-day Asthma workforce development session for other Wimmera health workers on consecutive days. The two days, facilitated by the Lung Health Promotion unit Melbourne with input from Asthma Victoria will be offered in partnership with the Wimmera Primary Care Partnership and the West Vic GP Division."

"The funding will enable the Wimmera Primary Care Partnership to continue to support the asthma educators to maintain their accreditation, confidence and skills to provide high quality healthcare to the Wimmera population without the necessity of extensive travel,” said Ms Hetherington.

“The Australian Government is providing $1.25 million to help people better manage their asthma and under the National Asthma Community Grants 2003-04 program, around 150 grants are to be offered nationwide,” advised Mr Forrest.

“The program will help increase community knowledge and awareness about how to live with and manage asthma.”
