Australian Export Awards Launched in Sydney (Ministerial)

Thursday, 26 May 2005 A027/2005

Trade Minister Mark Vaile today encouraged Australian exporters of all sizes to enter the 2005 Australian Export Awards at the official launch in Sydney.

“The Australian Export Awards recognise excellence in exporting and promote the sector’s highest achievers as role models for our business community. The diversity of last year’s winners is a testament to the strength and broad-based nature of the Australian exporting sector,” Mr Vaile said.

“These winners inspire and energise other local businesses to look to the global marketplace to sell their products and services. Exports account for nearly a quarter of Australia’s income and more than one-in-five Australian jobs. In regional Australia, that figure is a staggering one-in-four, so exports provide real support and stability for local communities.

“The 2005 awards are now looking for the next wave of Australian businesses that are leaders in their fields and have achieved outstanding success on the international stage. I encourage local businesses to enter.”

Mr Vaile also inducted NSW Riverina-based Casella Wines into the Australian Export Awards Hall of Fame. Casella becomes one of just four organisations in the Hall of Fame, established in 2002, to honour truly exceptional Australian businesses that achieve continuing export success.

Managing Director John Casella said the success of the winery was a result of having a long-term vision and ability to carry it through.

“I knew the key to success was going to be branded bottles of wine in export destinations. Austrade was instrumental in introducing the Casella family to our US importer. The rest, as they say, is history. Casella now exports more than twelve million cases of wine a year to the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and the United Kingdom,” Mr Casella said.

The Australian Export Awards recognise achievers in 11 categories across different industry sectors and are one of the longest-standing and most prestigious business industry awards in Australia.

The 2005 Australian Export Awards are jointly presented by Austrade and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). To enter the Australian Export Awards, companies must first enter their State or Territory awards. Overall winners will be announced in December 2005.
