Warley Hospital

I met today with the board of the Warley Hospital following their decision to cease providing acute and aged care services as at 31 January 2008.

The focus of our discussions was on what arrangements should be put in place to ensure the ongoing safety and welfare of the Warley Hospital’s patients and residents, and the people of Phillip Island.

The Warley Hospital’s board advised me that they are progressing negotiations with another aged care provider to operate its aged care services. My department will continue to provide support for a clinical adviser and a business adviser to assist the Warley Hospital with this transition.

The Warley Hospital’s board and I also discussed options for the continuing provision of primary care and after hours services on Phillip Island. My department will engage with the Victorian Government to examine how state-funded after hours GP call and clinic services can be maintained, and if there are ways that the Commonwealth may be able to assist with this.

In all these discussions, my key concern is for the safety and welfare of patients and residents, and how to ensure that high quality, sustainable health and aged care services can continue to be provided to the Phillip Island community.
