Democrats hail bus industry initiatives

The Democrats join the Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) today in calling for greater Government participation in public transport strategies, and for Australians to embrace the use of public transport.

Democrats Transport spokesperson, Senator Brian Greig congratulated the BIC on its public transport strategies and initiatives.

"The BIC has put forward some impressive strategies and policies to create an environmentally clean and efficient public transport system in this country," Senator Greig said.

"Likewise, the Democrats have also been successful in securing funding and taxation incentives to encourage Australians to leave their cars at home and travel by public transport, and we support the targets set by the industry to increase this participation.

"Australia has an appalling road fatality record, and while the tyranny of distance creates special challenges, we must find ways to traverse the countryside in a safer and more efficient way than by private car," Senator Greig said.

"Commuters must be able to get where they are going quickly, safely and economically, and travellers should have similar convenience when travelling long distances.

"Having already secured subsidies and incentives through the Democrats negotiated tax package, we are now looking at the possibilities of energy credits for public transport operators.

"During our negotiations with the Government, we successfully gained over $75 million per year to promote the conversion of buses and light commercial vehicles from diesel to gas," Senator Greig said.

"We are now keen to investigate tax incentives for the use of public transport and fringe benefits tax exemptions for employer-provided public transport."
