Hon Larry Anthony, MP

Minister for Community Services

21 December 1999

Approval has been given to fund a new $652,000 community-based long day care centre to be built in the Ipswich suburb of Racev iew, west of Brisbane by the Minister for Community Services, Larry Anthony.

Mr Anthony said the new centre would replace the existing Raceview Child Care Centre, which is more than 20 years old and no longer considered suitable for child care.

"The former centre is nearing its use-by date and is unable to accommodate the additional child care places that have been allocated to the centre," he said.

"The centre will be able to care for more than double the current number of children, with the new centre licensed for 46 places.

"The Federal Government recognises the important need for centre-based care in Ipswich and has responded with help to build a new long day care facility in the area."

Mr Anthony said the centre's sponsor, the Churches of Christ Queensland, would contribute more than $350,000 towards the project.

"The new centre will be a state-of-the-art facility with special features including large verandahs and external shade structures to protect children from the Queensland sun," he said.

Funding for the new centre formed part of the Commonwealth's Capital Replacement and Upgrade Program.

"The program is a significant element of the Government's overall commitment to quality, accredited child care for Australian families," he said.
