GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES $100,000 FUNDING FOR WINTER PARALYMPIC COACH

June 4, 1998

Sports Minister Andrew Thomson has an nounced the Government is providing $100,000 for the appointment of a full-time Winter Paralympics coach.

Mr Thomson said the Australian Sports Commission board had approved funding of $10,000 towards the cost of a coach for 1997-98, with an annual $40,000 grant in the following two years.

“The Australian team landed a gold medal through James Paterson’s outstanding performance in the men’s downhill event at Nagano,” Mr Thomson said.

“The Australian Paralympic Committee feels we didn’t fulfil our potential and put a clear case for the employment of a full-time coach.

“The Sports Commission concurs and hopefully we can improve our international standing and return to the level of success we had at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics.”

Mr Thomson said the position has been advertised and the Australian Paralympics Committee expects an appointment to be made in the near future.
