Budget Aims to Stifle Dissent

Following the initiative in last night’s budget that attempts to stifle environmental dissent, Greens Senator Bob Brown will move the following motion in the Senate.

That  the Senate:

1. Notes the condition on page 49 of the Environment and Heritage  Budget portfolio statement for 1999-2000 (under Grants to Voluntary Environment and Heritage Organisations) that:

“Funding is dependent on whether their activities contribute to Government environmental and heritage priorities”

2. Notes that environment groups that complied with this dictum would need to support such policies as: mining uranium at Jabiluka; logging koala habitat in NSW; wo odchipping the tallest trees in the southern hemisphere in Tasmania, and allowing an eight percent increase in greenhouse gas emissions in Australia by the year 2010.

3. Condemns this conditions as a deliberate means of compromising the environment by sti fling criticism of the Governments actions injurious to the environment.
