Media Release DavidHawkerMP Federal Member for Wannon

27 October 2003

Member for Wannon - David Hawker - has welcomed today’s announcement that the 52,000 sheep aboard the Cormo Express will go to Eritrea.

Mr. Hawker said news that a port had been found and there was no longer any need for the sheep to be shipped back to Australian waters was an enormous relief.

He praised the efforts of Federal Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, and all involved in finding an alternative destination.

Mr. Hawker was recently critical of the decision to return the sheep, saying it could have turned a difficult situation into a national disaster.

He said the consequences of releasing exotic diseases in Australia was too horrendous to contemplate.

“The Cormo Express saga highlights the need for an alternative plan to ensure this situation does not arise again,” Mr. Hawker said.

“The live sheep trade is a substantial Australian industry and I firmly believe it must continue.”

Mr. Hawker said people needed to be reminded that live sheep ships had left the Port of Portland on a regular basis and without incident, since the Cormo Express saga started.
