Senator Andrew Murray Australian Democrats Senator for Western Australia

2 Oct, 2003 MEDIA RELEASE 03/ 705

With the COAG meeting in Perth today of the Primary Industries Ministerial Council, West Australian Senator Andrew Murray took the opportunity to confirm his and the Democrats’ support for the vigil being held today in opposition to the cruel and inhumane treatment of sheep in Australia’s live trade.

“The Democrats have the strongest opposition to the cruel treatment exposed in the latest live sheep trade scandal,” said Senator Murray.

“Although we believe Australian standards are always open to improvement, the conditions under which animals are bred and slaughtered in Australia are ranked with the highest in the world.

“Frankly the state and federal governments have to recognise that if they cannot guarantee those same standards all the way to the point of sale of the slaughtered animal, they have no business being in the live trade at all.

“There is no halfway house here.

“We are either a civilised country that treats animals destined for slaughter as humanely as possible or we are not.

“The Democrats view is that if the federal government cannot guarantee Australian standards all the way to the plate, then there should be no live trade,” said Senator Murray.
