Greens to Oppose Super Cuts for Rich in the Senate Costello’s Cruel Chainsaw Budget in Tatters

Greens Senator Bob Brown has welcomed Labor’s announcement that it will oppose the Howard Government’s plan to reduce superannuation tax for the wealthy.

“I welcome Opposition leader Simon Crean’s decision to vote against the unfair super tax cuts,” Senator Brown said.

“Mr Costello should now rethink his cuts to pensions, the PBS and the reduction in environment spending which has seen almost $300M taken from Greenhouse spending alone.

“Australia doesn’t need more tax cuts. We need to fund a healthy Government sector to pay for quality public education, health care services and environment repair.

“The Greens will vote against superannuation tax cuts for the wealthiest Australians (including politicians),” Senator Brown said.

The Greens will also vote against the proposed cuts to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and access to disability pensions.
