A further $31 million available to enhance university facilities

17 May 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today invited universities to apply for $31 million to enhance the amenities available to students through new and improved sporting and recreational facilities and services provided by small businesses on regional campuses.

“Universities, particularly regional universities, play an important role in Australia’s regional centres and these facilities will be available to students and local communities alike,” Minister Bishop said.

Universities can apply in this second round of funding for:

• VSU Transition Fund for Sporting and Recreational Facilities - $24 million; and • Support for Small Businesses on Regional University Campuses Programme - $7 million.

“These programmes support student choice and enhance the campus experience,” Minister Bishop said.

“The introduction of voluntary student unionism has put more than $160 million back in the pockets of students - money that used to be paid in compulsory fees.”

The outcome of round 1 of the VSU Transition Fund and Small Businesses Programme, announced in February 2007, delivered more than $58 million for universities to provide sporting and recreational infrastructure and will be used to build or upgrade health and fitness facilities, medical and other services.

Applications for round 2 close on 2 July 2007.
