New South Wales action on landclearing welcome: what about Queensland?

KELVIN THOMSON Media Release from the Shadow Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Wednesday, 15 October 2003

I am delighted at today’s announcement by the New South Wales Government of significant steps to stop landclearing. This is an important step along the road to stop landclearing across Australia. Once again it reinforces Labor’s strong environmental credentials.

Early in 2002 Federal Labor committed to securing a halt to net landclearing, to stop the year in year out decline in Australia’s native vegetation cover.

Unfortunately, we are still waiting for the Howard Government to reach an agreement with Queensland to halt landclearing. Perhaps today’s NSW announcement might speed up the Howard Government’s incredibly slow progress.

Landclearing has three strikes on it. It is the single greatest cause of salinity, it is the single greatest threat to endangered birds, plants and animals, and it is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

The Carr Government deserves to be congratulated on this far-sighted initiative.
