‘Low income people, the elderly and the chronically ill have been hit with the equivalent of a new consumer drug tax’, said Francis Sullivan, CEO of Catholic Health Australia.

‘Reducing the public subsidy for poorer, sicker people has the same effect as raising the rate of the GST on essential medicine’, he said.

‘This measure wasn’t mentioned prior to the election and undermines the positive elements of the budget for the elderly.

‘This is regressive and can’t be justified when overall the Government has slashed $1 billion from the entire health and ageing budget.

‘For the poor and sick its pretty rough when the worst pain is felt in their hip pocket.
