GILLARD TO ESTABLISH RESOURCE REFERENCE GROUP

Today, Deputy Labor Leader and Shadow Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Julia Gillard has met with the Leadership of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy to discuss the critical issues confronting the resources sector in Western Australia.

Julia Gillard has also announced that a Resource Reference Group will be established to work directly with the sector.

Today's meeting was an important opportunity to hear first hand the range of challenges confronting both the sector and the state over the next decade.

Australians know the significance of the resources boom to Australia's economy. Australians also understand that our prosperity won't continue without a genuine commitment from government.

Industrial arrangements, keeping up with the demand for skilled workers and managing community relationships and infrastructure are all critical challenges.

There are specific issues unique to the sector and Labor recognises that.

As Shadow Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, I will convene a new Resource Reference Group to work directly with the sector.

It will include the Shadow Ministers for National Development, Resources and Energy; Education and Training; Indigenous Affairs and Reconciliation; and Immigration, Integration and Citizenship.

The Labor Candidate for Brand, Mr Gary Gray will be invited to join the group. Gary is a former senior executive at resources giant Woodside and will be an asset to this work.

A detailed program for the Resource Reference Group will be developed in the coming weeks.
