HIDDEN WONDERS TO ENCOURAGE DOMESTIC HOLIDAYS Australians are being encouraged to holiday at some of our country’s hidden wonders as part of a new domestic holiday promotion being launched this week to showcase seven Australian natural wonders.

The promotion, which is a joint initiative between Tourism Australia and Network Nine, will see a special episode of Australia’s Seven Hidden Wonders Down Under air on the Getaway program this week. It will be supported by online, cinema, inflight, Pay TV and magazine activities.

“Domestic tourists spent $54 billion during their travels last year - helping to create thousands of jobs and bringing valuable tourist dollars to destinations across Australia,” Tourism Minister Fran Bailey said today.

“Australian holidays are competing with overseas destinations and plasma TVs for the leisure dollar so we need to showcase great Australian destinations. Partnering with Getaway allows us to achieve these goals.

“Australia offers fantastic holiday experiences, for both domestic and international tourists. By showcasing our great and hidden wonders, we hope to encourage more Australians to consider a holiday at home and help create more local jobs."

The program will focus on seven Australian natural wonders - from Mungo and Croajingolong National Parks in the east to Cape York and Arnhem Land in the north, to North West Tassie and Kangaroo Island in the south and the Pilbara in the west.

To support the initiative Tourism Australia has partnered with Ninemsn to produce the Travel Australia section of the website (

In addition cut-down versions of the stories aired on the program will be screened in cinemas, on Pay TV and on Qantas and Virgin Blue in-flight entertainment. A special 44-page Hidden Wonders magazine will also be distributed with leading magazines over the coming months.
