The appointments of Professor Berna Collier and Justice Dennis Cowdroy OAM as judges of the Federal Court of Australia has been announced today by the Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock.

Professor Collier has been a Commissioner of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission since 2001, and is a past director of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority and member of the advisory board of Axiss Australia. Prior to that, she was Clayton Utz Professor of Commercial Law at the Queensland University of Technology where she has continued to hold the Chair in absentia.

Professor Collier has written and presented widely in relation to aspects of insolvency and commercial law and medico-legal practice and has practised in both Melbourne and Brisbane with a number of leading law firms.

Professor Collier will take up her appointment on 8 February 2006 and will be based in Brisbane.

Justice Cowdroy has been a judge of the New South Wales Land and Environment Court since 1999. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, Justice Cowdroy was an acting judge of the New South Wales Supreme Court and the Land and Environment Court. Justice Cowdroy practised at the New South Wales Bar and was appointed as a Queen’s Counsel in 1989.

In 1995, Justice Cowdroy was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the Returned Services League, Law and the Community.

Justice Cowdroy will take up his appointment on 13 March 2006 and will be based in Sydney.

“I welcome the appointments of Professor Collier and Justice Cowdroy,” Mr Ruddock said. “Both appointees have extensive experience and possess the skills necessary to equip them to meet the challenges of their new roles. I wish them well in their new appointments.”
