Press Release Ref: 922 Published: 24/3/2003 Title: Nairn congratulates Constances on Bega win

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, today congratulated Andrew Constance on his winning the State Electorate of Bega in last Saturday’s State Election.

“While there are still many absentee, postal and pre-poll votes to count, it would seem apparent that Andrew will be the next Member for Bega,” he said.

“The win comes at the end of about nine months of hard work by him and his campaign team and that hard work has been translated into a solid win.

“It is an understatement to say that it hasn’t been easy but Andrew’s courage in the face of many difficulties indicates he will be a very good Member for Bega and one who will fight hard for his electorate,” Gary Nairn said.

“While it was disappointing that a former member of the Liberal Party stood as an independent in the election thus creating difficulties under an optional preferential voting system, we should never complain about the free democracy we live in.

“During such times it is only human nature that some people get caught between Party loyalties and long time friendships,” he added.

“But now that the electorate has made its decision it is important that everyone gets behind the new Member for Bega.

“I look forward to working closely with Andrew Constance in the years ahead as I did with retiring Member Russell Smith since I became the Federal Member in 1996, to jointly serve the people of the coast,” Gary Nairn concluded.

Gary Nairn said he would be making a comment about the other State seat, Monaro, which falls within his Federal electorate, once the final outcome is more certain.
