***** MEDIA RELEASE ***** 8 August 2003

A packed meeting at Thirroul Surf Club last night heard that the MS Society’s annual Sydney to the Gong Bike Ride will be effectively shut down if Lawrence Hargrave Drive remains closed, Cunningham MP Michael Organ said today.

“More than 200 people at the meeting called on the Carr government, and State Transport Minister Carl Scully to provide a support package to help alleviate the hardships being felt by Northern Illawarra residents and businesses”, Mr. Organ said.

“I was appalled to hear that an elderly resident no longer has access to Meals On Wheels because Lawrence Hargrave Drive is closed, and the suffering being imposed on northern suburbs residents by this unexplained closure is worsening by the day.”

“For a seven year old girl to have her daily trip to school extended from a few minutes to an hour and a half is nothing short of ridiculous.”

“On top of that the RTA has not yet advised organisers of MS Society’s Sydney to The Gong Ride about the road closure, despite the fact that the event has been going for 21 years, with an expected 9,000 participants this year bringing a lot of money and opportunity to the city and potentially raising a quarter of a million dollars for the Society.”

“The government must permanently reopen Lawrence Hargrave Drive as a matter of urgency”, Mr. Organ said.
