The Hon Mark Vaile MP

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry

15 February 1999

Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister, Mark Vaile, and Minister for Forestry and Conservation, Wilson Tuckey, today jointly announced funding for 89 Natural Heritage Trust projects for the Northern Territory totalling more than $4.4 million.

Ministers Vaile and Tuckey said the projects would support Northern Territory communities working towards the sustainable use of natural resources.

"Seventy-six projects worth $3.766 million will be supported under the National Landcare Program with $730,000 for 15 projects going to community groups such as the Victoria River District Conservation Association to initiate their Rangelands Projects Officer project," Mr Vaile said.

"We are also supporting Aboriginal Landcare with a number of projects, for example, $45,500 to the Greening Australia/Northern Land Council project for landcare education, and $64,087 to Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation for its land management initiative."

"Community groups will also benefit from funding under the National Rivercare Initiative which is funding ten projects worth $459,000 in the Northern Territory.

"This Initiative is a major investment in the health of Australia’s river systems. Projects include ground works such as those of the Katherine Landcare Group, which is receiving $21,000 to rehabilitate a section of the Katherine River."

Under the Farm Forestry Program, Mr Tuckey announced continued funding of $104,710 to the Top End Regional Hardwood Forestry Project.

"It would further boost the Top End farm forestry network, with anticipated spinoffs for both the management of natural resources and the economy," he said.
