A score for Townsville’s League referees Friday, 18 August 2006

Running short of referees on League days will soon be a thing of the past, with a new Referee Training Facility soon to open in Townsville. The Townsville and District Junior Rugby League have just received a Federal Government grant of $23,000 to put towards its new Referee Training Facility at the Kern Brothers Drive rugby league

field. “This is fantastic news today for our local Rugby League, when it has fought long and hard to get a Referee Training Facility up and running,” Member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay, said. “With nearly three thousand children playing League, clubs have had to battle the problem of running short of referees on game days. “This new facility will provide a number of courses and support for our local referees, while focusing on recruiting and retention. “The facility will also benefit the wider community, as it will also be open for use to other sporting clubs, cheer squads and non-profit organisations.” The funding of $22,888 was provided through the Federal Government’s Regional Partnerships Programme, which funds projects that help communities.
