Capital funding for New England Child Care centres

More than $75,000 in capital grants has been awarded to three child care centres in New England, NSW Senator Sandy Macdonald said today.

"These community-based child care centres are a necessity in these towns and I am pleased the Australian Government has seen fit to provide them with some assistance," Senator Macdonald said.

The funding includes;

• $54,230 for Hobbit New England Pre school and Child Care Centre, Armidale to upgrade the administration and kitchen areas,

• $13,255 for Birrelee MACS Child care centre, Tamworth to upgrade the playground with a bicycle track, and

• $8,278 for Catherine Campbell Centre Inverell to upgrade the kitchen area.

Senator Macdonald said the improvements to the centre are vital in providing a safe and healthy environment.

"These three centres provide a much-needed service to the community and it is important that the facilities are able to be maintained," he said.

"The Australian Government is committed to providing assistance to child care centres such as these, which sometimes need a helping hand. We will continue to provide funding in this way to ensure that parents have access to adequate child care facilities across rural and regional Australia," Senator Macdonald said.

Nearly $10 million has been provided Australia-wide to help child care services address health and safety issues and provide resources for the repair and renovation of buildings and playgrounds.

Families requiring more information about child care should call the Australian Government National Child Care Hotline on 1800 670 305.
