Australian Democrats Press Releases

Senator Andrew Bartlett Deputy Parliamentary Leader and Democrats Senator for Queensland Australian Democrats spokesperson for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs

Dated: 25 February 2006 Press Release Number: wxbjpsty Portfolio: Immigration and Multicultural Affairs

What are Australian Values Mr Costello?

Australian Democrats Deputy Leader and spokesperson on Multiculturalism, has today put out a challenge to Mr Costello, Mr Howard and Mr Robb to explain to Australians what they mean by Australian values.

"The values displayed by the Howard Government in the past 10 years such as dishonesty, locking children in detention, restricting freedom of speech, forcing struggling sole parents into the workforce; are certainly not values I subscribe to," said Senator Bartlett.

"A recent Saulwick poll found that a majority of Australians think Australia is becoming a meaner place.

"Many believe Australia has become less compassionate, less tolerant (although we tolerate Government dishonesty), less democratic, and instead more divided, fearful, controlling and materialistic.

"Are these the values Mr Costello is talking about?

"The Liberal Party has been openly courting Australia's fundamentalists Christians, some of whom openly speak of the supremacy of God's law, yet smears Muslims who have the same beliefs.

"I don't support terrorism or extremism who ever preaches them, but I also don't support the Howard Governments values either," concluded Senator Bartlett.
