GREAT VICTORIAN ROAD ROBBERY: COSTELLO BETRAYS VICTORIAN MOTORISTS

Treasurer Peter Costello has broken a promise to Victorian motorists by allowing hundreds of millions of dollars originally allocated to the Scoresby road project to be siphoned off to other states.

On 8 October 2005 Mr Costello said he had decided Victorian motorists "should not suffer" as a consequence of the Victorian Government's decision not to use Federal funding for the Scoresby project.

But Department of Transport and Regional Services documents obtained by Labor reveal that Mr Costello has broken that commitment.

Forty per cent of Scoresby funding - $231 million - has been directed to projects in other states or allocated to the Howard Government's strategic regional 'road rorts' program.

Victorian motorists and the state's road transport industry are the victims of the Howard Government's Great Victorian Road Robbery.

A final kick in the teeth for Victoria is the decision to allocate the remaining $25 million of unallocated Scoresby funding to the national 'road rorts' program controlled by the National Party.

This allocation - to be announced in Tuesday's Federal Budget - will boost available 'road rorts' funding to $125 million courtesy of Victorian motorists.

Once again, the National Party tail has wagged the Liberal Party dog - this time, its name really is Peter Costello.

The Howard Government's re-allocation of Scoresby project funding ($541.53m):
