ROGER PRICE MP Federal Member for Chifley

MEDIA RELEASE 16th December 2003

With summer well and truly upon us, Federal Chifley MP, Roger Price, has reminded local families to protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun.

“Skin cancer is reaching endemic levels in Australia with one in two expected to suffer from its’ effects throughout their lifetime”, Mr. Price said.

“We all like to enjoy ourselves in the sun over the holiday period but it’s important that we protect ourselves, and the best way to do that is by wearing sensible clothing and using the right kind of sunscreen”.

Mr. Price said there was a range of sun protective clothing on the market these days.

“Some clothing will carry a UV rating advising consumers how good the garment is in protecting their skin. Any garment above UPF 15 will provide suitable protection”, he said.

“Dark garments are also advisable, particularly for those spending extended periods of time outdoors, as they are better at absorbing UV”.

Mr. Price said it was equally important that people wear hats and sunglasses while outdoors.

“A broad brim hat provides strong protection for the head and neck while sunglasses which block out at least 95% of UV will guard your eyes against damage later in life”.

Finally, Mr. Price urged residents to use the right kind of sunscreen this summer.

“You should check that your sunscreen is SPF 15 plus to 30 plus and make sure you reapply it at two hour intervals”.

“You should also be aware that insect repellent can reduce the SPF of a sunscreen”.
