TV transmitter rollout for remote communities

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, announced during a visit to Alice Springs today that up to 80 remote Indigenous communities will receive expanded television services under the Australian Government's Television Fund.

"I am pleased to announce $2 million in funding to provide additional television transmitters at Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services (RIBS) sites across remote Australia," the Minister said.

"The project will be delivered through the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF)."

The Minister said that transmission of culturally relevant content had been steadily increasing from Imparja Television's Indigenous narrowcast television (ICTV) service in Alice Springs.

"Currently, remote Indigenous communities have only one transmitter to carry Indigenous community television programming and ABC television services. These new transmitters will enable communities to

have a dedicated channel for each," Senator Coonan said.

RIBS services have the capacity to produce their own video programs and expanded transmission time means they will have the opportunity to broadcast their own community programming to a wider audience.

The Community Broadcasting Foundation will work closely with seven regional hubs that support RIBS services across Australia, including the Torres Strait Islander Media Association, to establish the new services.

There will be a cap of $25,000 per new service. Community councils that had already installed an additional transmitter will be able to apply for reimbursement of that cost.

The initiative will be funded from the $120 million Television Fund. It is part of the Australian Government's ongoing commitment to ensuring better access to television services for all Australians.
