$60,000 Federal funding for South Australian tourism websites

The Federal Government has awarded the South Australian Tourist Commission $60,000 to add secure e-commerce facilities to all the Regional Tourism Marketing Board websites.  

The Federal Minister for Tourism, Jackie Kelly today announced tourism grants as part of the first round of the $2 million Regional Online Tourism Program, which aims to help develop tourism websites and e-commerce capability for regional areas. 

"The $60,000 will assist the development of secure e-commerce and product reservation facilities and the creation of additional websites for two new regions. Tourists will have the opportunity to view attractions and inquire about products using a safe and secure website," Minister Kelly said.  

"It is an excellent example of an initiative that will remove any fears people might have about making bookings over the Internet, as well as educating tourists about the wonderful attractions in South Australia. 

Minister Kelly said it was vital that regions develop their tourism market using available technology as business moved into a 'dotcom' era.

"The Regional Online Tourism Program is a major commitment to help regional tourism position itself in the new economy. With IT development changing rapidly, regional tourism operators need to be well prepared, innovative and able to access the expanding opportunities for tourism over the Internet. 

"The Internet offers people working in the tourism industry an opportunity to present information to customers in a new way. A website can be tailored to special interest tourism or a specific area and the information is available for customers at any time from anywhere. 

"The Internet offers regional Australia the same level playing-field and exposure as the world's largest capital cities, it can put regional and rural Australia on the tourism map and increase its competitiveness in the international market as well as the domestic market."
