DEMOCRATS MEDIA 04/854 SATURDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 2004 SENATOR LYN ALLISON AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRATS ENERGY AND RESOURCES SPOKESPERSON BAD ENERGY POLICY TO COST HIP POCKET AND ENVIRONMENT The Australian Democrats warn drivers will pay up big at the bowser if the Howard Government is re-elected, with the Prime Minister set to reconfirm his commitment to fossil fuels at tomorrow's World Energy Congress. Senator Lyn Allison, Democrats Energy and Resources spokesperson said petrol prices are already hovering around $1 a litre due to unsettled oil markets in the aftermath of the Howard-supported war on Iraq. "Drivers must be aware that Mr Howard's failure to encourage fuel efficient vehicles and commitment to petrol and diesel is cementing a dependence on expensive and dirty fuel, when there are renewable and cleaner alternatives," Senator Allison said. "The Howard Government is clearly more swayed by fuel companies than worried about energy security, poor air quality or the cost of fuel in our hugely car-dependent society." "The Democrats urge the Prime Minister to refrain from pushing his dubious geosequestration of coal fired power generation emissions proposals at the congress and focus instead on the benefits of wind and solar," concluded Senator Allison. The World Energy Congress, to be opened by Mr Howard in Sydney tomorrow, will involve three thousand industry leaders, government ministers, financiers and regulators from around the world.
