At a time when drought is ravaging much of Australia, the Howard-Anderson Government continues to fiddle while our nation dehydrates.

It’s now five months since the Deputy Prime Minister promised the people of Victoria that the Federal Government would contribute to the Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline project.

But nothing has happened.

While it seems just about everyone has a grand vision to help overcome our national water and salinity problems, the Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline Group has a practical solution for their region.

The pipeline will result in increased river flows, increased security of water supply, reduced salinity concerns, opportunities for regional development and recreational and tourism activity.

Water will also be distributed to the region much more efficiently.

A single, national solution to Australia’s water problems may never eventuate but the Wimmera-Mallee is a perfect example of how coordinated, effective regional solutions can work.

While it may not overcome the current drought, it paves the way for providing some drought proofing for the region in the future.

The Victorian Government has come to the party and committed $77 million over the next 10 years to build the Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline yet the region continues to wait for John Anderson’s promise to become a reality.

How can the Howard Government find $20million for Namoi Valley cotton growers in John Anderson’s electorate and $1.375million for a game meat abattoir in Ipswich, when vital infrastructure projects like the pipeline wait for action?

The Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline project is ready to go now. What are you waiting for, Mr Anderson?
