While the Rudd Government has fiddled, Australia’s textile, clothing and footwear sector has burned.

Five months ago, commenting upon the release of the Rudd Government’s own review into Australia’s textile, clothing and footwear industry, Industry Minister Carr said:

"The report demonstrates that we can be confident about the future of TCF industries, if the right policy decisions are made now."

That was 19th September 2008.

The Government continues to sit on this report.

Today, 160 days of inaction later, Pacific Brands has announced it will cut 1,850 manufacturing jobs in Australia.

The Prime Minister is fond of saying, and Minister Carr parroting, that he doesn’t want to be the Prime Minister of a country that “doesn’t make things”.

It is time for both to stop fiddling and act to address the serious challenges facing Australia’s manufacturing sector.
