MEDIA RELEASE Senator the Hon Joe Ludwig Minister for Human Services Senator for Queensland

Financial support for students

Human Services Minister, Senator Joe Ludwig, today encouraged students and their parents to check their eligibility for Centrelink support.

“Centrelink has a range of assistance available to high school and university students, and apprentices, including Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY payments,” Senator Ludwig said.

“It’s quick and simple for students to use Centrelink’s online services to claim their payments.”

“Other initiatives can also help, such as the Student Income Bank. It allows students to work part-time and earn up to $6,000 a year before their Centrelink payments are affected - that’s on top of the $6,000 income tax free threshold.”

“New students should also check their eligibility for a Health Care Card. It will help students save money on prescription medicines and offers a range of other concessions.”

Senator Ludwig said young people leaving home for the first time should also look closely at their options.

“Support such as Rent Assistance and travel allowances, may be available to students who have to move away from home to study,” Senator Ludwig said.

“Moving out on your own is a big change and Centrelink also has social workers available to provide counselling and support.”

Senator Ludwig also said it’s a perfect time for students to take advantage of Centrelink’s Career Information Centres.

“These Centres have specialised staff who can provide assistance at no charge to students and help them make informed decisions about education, training and employment options.”

“You don’t need to be a Centrelink customer to visit a Career Information Centre, and there are 12 centres around Australia.”
