SENATOR THE HON MARK ARBIB Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development Minister for Sport Minister for Social Housing and Homelessness

ANDREW LEIGH MP Member for Fraser

June 24 2011

The Australian Government is supporting a new partnership to boost employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians in the ACT aged care sector.

Minister for Social Housing and Homelessness Mark Arbib and Member for Fraser Andrew Leigh said the project would recruit and provide pre-employment training, job placements and mentoring for up to 30 Indigenous Australians.

“Participants will obtain a Certificate III in Aged Care Operations through Illawarra Retirement Trust and will then begin work at its new Kangara Waters facility in Belconnen,” Senator Arbib said.

“Already seven participants have completed their pre-employment training and have started work at Kangara Waters.

”This is a great result and I expect many more participants to start soon, well before the recruitment initiatives end in June 2012.”

Mr Leigh said the Campbell Page Aged Care Project was a result of almost $380,000 in funding from the Gillard Government’s Indigenous Employment Program.

“The number of Australians who will need support as they get older is increasing, as is the demand for skilled labour in the aged care industry,” Mr Leigh said.

“The skills gained through this training will enable the participants to take advantage of the opportunities in this growth industry, leading to a rewarding career.”

Senator Arbib said Treasury predicted 500,000 jobs would be created over the next two years and it was critical that Indigenous Australians had the support and training they needed to take up employment.

“Indigenous employment is not a short term issue. Over the next four years the Government has also committed almost $650 million to the Indigenous Employment Program,” Senator Arbib said.

“This is part of the Gillard Government’s target to create more than 100,000 jobs for Indigenous Australians by 2018.”
