New Trade Training Centre opens in Prestons

More than 350 students in Years 7-12 at William Carey Christian School in Prestons will have access to new vocational training facilities with the opening today of a new $1.3 million Trade Training Centre (TTC).

The Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett, and Member for Werriwa, Laurie Ferguson, officially opened the new centre which was funded by the Gillard Government’s $2.5 billion Trade Training Centres in Schools Program.

The centre includes a new industry-standard metals and engineering workshop, featuring computer aided design facilities.

“This is an outstanding Trade Training Centre which is already benefiting schools, students and the broader Prestons community,” Mr Garrett said.

“Principals, parents and tradespeople have worked together to ensure the facility will provide qualifications directly relevant to local industries.

“It will provide a real boost to the learning and training opportunities available to the young people of this region and I was delighted to be here with the local member to open this great new facility today.”

The centre will deliver a range of training in engineering qualifications, including technology, metals, engineering and design and technology.

“This will be a great facility for our local area and will give young people in Prestons the best start in life,” Mr Ferguson said.

“A lot of young people in this area want to get a trade when they finish school. This Centre will allow them to start learning a trade while they are still at high school.”

Trade Training Centres will increase the number of students achieving Year 12 or an equivalent qualification, and help meet skill shortages in trades and emerging industries.

The Australian Government has awarded more than $1.03 billion to fund 288 projects benefiting over 900 schools across Australia through the Trade Training Centres in Schools Program.
